“Yet, in practice, she has shown a disregard for actually elevating those voices. Now, she’s been signed on to write a Syrian refugee’s story? Hollywood, was no female Arab writer available?”
They should make Lena Dunham co-write and co-direct with Phoenician-American N.N. Taleb.
It’s interesting that the now omnipresent pejorative “whiteness” may have first swum into my ken in early 2012 involving Lena Dunham’s TV show Girls:

At a 2016 conference in Barcelona, Spain, attended by more than 5,000 people, I was one of fewer than 10 black people. In response, I co-founded Black in AI. It is now a thriving community of more than 1,000 students, researchers and AI enthusiasts ready to share ideas and foster collaboration to increase representation of black people. Despite the support, many of us still have trouble making it to conferences. I have had papers accepted at meetings but been unable to attend because Western countries such as Australia denied me a visa, even though I was already settled and working professionally in Europe.
We need more efforts to overcome these barriers and to ensure that the benefits of AI arrive globally. Many of the essential ingredients are already in, or coming into place. The human resources are there. Africa is home to the youngest and fastest-growing population on Earth. I am 33 years old, and that makes me older than most of the continent’s inhabitants (the median age in Africa is 19; in the European Union, 43). Enthusiasm is huge. Last year, the Deep Learning Indaba gatherings across Africa hosted 300 students from 23 African countries, and had to turn down more applicants than it could accept.

It truly is a “mental breakdown in liberal America”, isn’t it. Amazing how so many people can become so unhinged over the most trivial of expressions. Yet, this stupidity is treated as moral, righteous, and certain – to hell with who gets hurt or destroyed.
Not good enough. Should have specified an Arab Muslim. An Arab Sunni Muslim. An Arab Sunni Muslim from the al-Zamil clan. Just having any Arab female represent you is total appropriation. Also, any script writer who profits from this story is making money on the washed up corpses of the shipwrecked dead. Anyone who writes this script should donate their entire fee to some non-profit.
But please make sure to get someone really talented, someone who is a really gifted script writer.

Basically my understanding of the Rules Against Cultural Appropriation is:
1) non-whites are free to take, borrow, use, or adapt white language, white culture, white dress, white technology, white stories, white history, or anything else, because there is no such thing as race, so these things don’t belong to whites alone.
2) non-white cultures should be appreciated, embraced, celebrated, and shared in order to celebrate “minorities” and their contributions…unless some idiot somewhere on Twitter and/or the New York Times and/or Teen Vogue decides that it is “cultural appropriation,” in which case suddenly it’s the greatest crime ever.
Does it strike anyone as kind of ironic that the bitch who yelled right in the face of a college professor just a few years ago was yelling in a language (English) not created by her race, at a school not founded by someone of her race, with professors who were almost certainly not of her race, teaching her knowledge and culture overhwhelmingly not created by people of her race, was daily using technology > 99.9% of which was not created by people of her race…but was pissed about someone wearing a stupid costume?

Also, Brian Williams’ daughter Allison was on Girls and I saw her say once that her parents wouldn’t let her watch TV growing up, which is interesting given the NYT article today about Silicon Valley parents not letting their kids use any kind of computer.

That’s not a liberal or Silicon Valley thing. It’s a (relatively) high IQ thing. The recommendation from pediatricians is to limit electronic screen (TV, computer, iPad, iPhone, etc.) time for young children to two hours per day at most.

There are many obstacles to an AI researcher from Africa making it into the global community. At a 2016 conference in Barcelona, Spain, attended by more than 5,000 people, I was one of fewer than 10 black people. In response, I co-founded Black in AI. It is now a thriving community of more than 1,000 students, researchers and AI enthusiasts ready to share ideas and foster collaboration to increase representation of black people. I have had papers accepted at meetings but been unable to attend because Western countries such as Australia denied me a visa, even though I was already settled and working professionally in Europe.
We need more efforts to overcome these barriers and to ensure that the benefits of AI arrive globally. Many of the essential ingredients are already in, or coming into place. The human resources are there. Africa is home to the youngest and fastest-growing population on Earth. I am 33 years old, and that makes me older than most of the continent’s inhabitants (the median age in Africa is 19; in the European Union, 43). Enthusiasm is huge. The idea that even a film’s writer has to ethically match its characters is a new one for me. Next they’ll be race-testing the grips and gaffers.

For whatever its worth. I recall looking into her, and she was raised by her single white mother, who was some sort of “designer” in the quite wealthy portion of SW Connecticut.
